Drepung Gomang Monastery expels Gelug MP Atuk Tseten, bars monks from electoral politics

DHARAMSHALA, May 11: One of the largest Buddhist monastic institutions in exile, Drepung Gomang Monastery, in an unprecedented move, has unanimously passed a resolution expelling Gelug Member of Parliament Geshe Lharampa Atuk Tseten from the monastery’s administrative and welfare association, citing repeated breaches of monastic discipline, disregard for pledges, and conduct deemed detrimental to the reputation of the monastic community and the broader Tibetan religious establishment. The monastery also directed that any monk from the particular monastery seeking to enter politics must resign from the monastery or face similar disciplinary action.
