Hidden in plain sight, they found an ancient rock carving of the great Tibetan yogi and bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo, measuring approximately 77 cm, alongside a Mani inscription. Accompanied by Ladakhi historian and monk, Choegyal, the team learned that such carvings of Thangtong Gyalpo are extremely rare in Ladakh. This prompted questions about the historical and spiritual links between Thangtong Gyalpo and the region. Two days later, the team met Karma Jungney, a local stone collector with over 30 years of experience. According to him, the carving dates back to the 17th century and was made by a monk from Wakha who had traveled to Tibet to study Buddhism. On returning, he carved the image of Thangtong Gyalpo based on a painting, intending it to protect the village from natural disasters like floods. This unexpected find raises a compelling question: Is this the only known statue of Thangtong Gyalpo in Ladakh, or does it hint at a deeper, forgotten spiritual connection between Ladakh and this legendary figure of Tibetan history?
