On this day, October 17, 2007, His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama was awarded "U.S. Congressional Gold Medal" the highest civilian honor bestowed by the United States Congress.

* His enduring contributions to peace, nonviolence, human rights, and
religious understanding.
* For being a moral leader who inspired global efforts toward justice.
* For his role as the Tibetan people’s spiritual spokesperson.
